    Refers to the empire that ruled lands in west and central Europe; first ruled by Frankish and then German kings for ten centuries, from Charlemagne's coronation in 800 until the renunciation of the imperial title in 1806. At its fullest extent, it consisted of Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Switzerland, eastern France, the Netherlands, and much of Italy.
