Holland
Area along North Sea in Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland provinces; former medieval county established when it became independent of Lorraine in the 11th century; Count William II became emperor in 1247; united with Zeeland and Hainaut in the 14th century; passed to Burgundy in 1433.
