Vidin is a river port on the Danube River in northwestern Bulgaria. The Romans fortified the original large Celtic settlement in the 1st century CE. It was briefly the capital (1396) of a kingdom that was the remnant of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The Ottoman Turks ruled it from 1396 to 1878. The town serves a fertile hinterland renowned for its wines and hosts an annual fair. Its historic architecture includes a 13th-century fortress and two churches, St. Panteleimon and St. Petka that have excellent murals. The 2003 estimated population was 130,300.
