Douai

Located on Scarpe river; ruled by counts of Flanders and dukes of Burgundy, Austria and Spain in the Middle Ages; captured by Louis XIV in 1667; ceded to France in 1668; almost destroyed during sieges of 1710 and 1712; was damaged during World Wars I and II.
