Stavelot

The town arose after the founding of a Benedictine abbey around 650. The abbots were princes of the Holy Roman Empire. The monastic foundation was abolished during the French Revolution. Its extensive buildings, dating from the 18th century, still exist and serve secular purposes. The place has become infamous for the nearby massacre of American prisoners of war in the Second World War.
